Smart Groundwater Monitoring with LoRaWAN Technology

V2-13219 Keller ADT Application

A Smarter, Scalable Groundwater Monitoring Solution,

To overcome the challenges of manual data collection, Salzgitter Digital Solution GmbH implemented a fully automated Groundwater monitoring using LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) technology.

LoRaWAN is a low-power, long-range wireless communication protocol designed specifically for industrial IoT (Internet of Things) applications, making it ideal for remote environmental monitoring such as groundwater level measurement.

In collaboration with KELLER Pressure, the solution combines high-precision level probes with the ADT1 LoRa transmission unit. This enables reliable, real-time wireless groundwater level monitoring across multiple locations.

Key Benefits of the LoRaWAN Monitoring System

V2-13219- Keller Application

  • Accurate groundwater level measurement using high-quality, validated sensors
  • Seamless LoRaWAN integration into existing industrial networks
  • Real-time data access across all monitoring points
  • Scalable solution for expanding monitoring requirements
  • Reduced manual labour and improved operational efficiency

In addition to groundwater level data, the system continuously monitors critical diagnostics, including:

  • Battery voltage – ensuring optimal power performance
  • Temperature – monitoring internal system conditions
  • Humidity – detecting environmental moisture levels
  • Signal quality – maintaining reliable wireless communication

This data enables predictive maintenance, helping operators identify potential issues early and reduce downtime.

Built for Reliability, Low Maintenance, and Data Security

The ADT1 LoRa transmission unit is designed for long-term, low-maintenance operation. Powered by standard AA batteries, it can operate for up to five years, depending on measurement intervals—making it ideal for remote and hard-to-access locations.

For secure and reliable data transmission, the system uses encrypted LoRa communication to ensure all groundwater monitoring data is protected. An integrated data logger provides an additional layer of reliability by storing data locally, preventing data loss during temporary network interruptions.

Proven Performance in Industrial Environments

This LoRaWAN-based groundwater monitoring system has been operating reliably for over three years, transforming a previously manual and labour-intensive process into a fully automated, scalable, and efficient solution.

The result is improved environmental compliance, better data-driven decision-making, and enhanced operational performance across industrial sites.
