The Optris PI 640i is a high-accuracy, high-performance infrared thermal camera designed for research, process engineering, and continuous industrial temperature monitoring. As part of the Optris Precision Line, it delivers exceptional image quality, stable radiometric measurements, and seamless system integration for demanding applications.

The PI 640i features a VGA-resolution uncooled microbolometer detector (640 × 480 pixels), producing pin-sharp radiometric thermal images and video. Operating in the long-wave infrared (8–14 µm) spectrum, the camera measures temperatures from –20 °C up to 900 °C, with optional high-temperature calibration extending the range to 1500 °C. This wide measurement span makes the PI 640i suitable for both low-temperature research tasks and high-temperature industrial processes.

An optimized 17 µm pixel pitch combined with very low thermal noise enables a thermal sensitivity down to 25 mK. This allows accurate temperature measurement on very small targets, where the object only needs to cover a 3 × 3 pixel measurement field of view (MFOV). Compared to cameras with smaller pixel pitches, the PI 640i achieves precise measurement without requiring excessive proximity to the target.

The PI 640i supports a 32 Hz full-frame rate for standard monitoring and a high-speed subframe mode up to 125 Hz, enabling the capture of fast thermal transients and short-lived hotspots with minimal motion blur. Per-pixel radiometric data is available at full frame rate, ensuring accurate timing and detailed thermal analysis in rapid manufacturing or test processes.

A wide range of interchangeable lenses allows the camera to be adapted to different working distances and fields of view. This includes a 120° × 100° ultra-wide-angle lens—the first of its kind in industrial thermography—for large-area process monitoring, as well as telephoto options such as 15° × 11° optics for detailed inspection. High-quality, AR-coated LWIR optics minimize distortion and ensure uniform attenuation across the image for reliable, repeatable measurements.

Designed for stationary operation, the PI 640i uses uncooled bolometer technology without mechanical moving parts, resulting in enhanced robustness, low power consumption, and long operational life compared to traditional infrared line scanners. The compact metal housing incorporates internal temperature compensation to maintain radiometric stability in changing ambient conditions.

The camera integrates seamlessly into automation and control environments. A rear process interface provides analog and digital I/O for temperature output, alarms, triggering, and synchronization at the hardware level. Optional Industrial Process Interface accessories support current and relay outputs for direct PLC and control system integration. SDKs and drivers for Windows and Linux enable advanced application development, synchronized data acquisition, and custom automation workflows.

The PI 640i operates with PIX Connect software, which is supplied free of charge with ongoing updates. PIX Connect provides real-time visualization, hot and cold spot detection, histograms, line profiles, image subtraction, and time-versus-temperature analysis. Radiometric video can be recorded, replayed frame by frame, and exported, allowing engineers and researchers to extract calibrated temperature data from any pixel or region of interest. A dedicated line-scan mode converts the two-dimensional thermal image into a continuous temperature profile, making the PI 640i ideal for sheet-based and moving-material applications such as glass production, plastic thermoforming, conveyor belts, and wallboard manufacturing.

Built for harsh environments, the PI 640i features an IP67 (NEMA 4) rated housing and operates at ambient temperatures from 0 °C to 70 °C without additional protection. A comprehensive range of accessories supports extreme conditions, including water-cooled enclosures for ambient temperatures up to 315 °C, air-purge systems for dusty or vapor-filled environments, and outdoor housings with integrated heating. Calibration certificates are available to support quality systems and traceability requirements.
